ACUPRESSURE

Acupressure is a form of traditional Asian Bodywork Therapy (ABT).  Similar to acupuncture, acupressure is based on the holistic system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Where it differs is the way it is administered.  Acupuncturists use needles, and acupressure therapists use their fingers (also palms, elbows and feet) to stimulate the acupressure (acu) points located throughout your body.  This system has been used for over 3,000 years for relaxation, stress relief and to resolve specific health problems. When stress is reduced or eliminated, symptoms go away.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, symptoms are the result of imbalances in our natural energy flow which is called qi (pronounced “chee”). Improving the flow of qi and restoring your natural balance can reduce and/or eliminate these symptoms.  To do this, an acupressurist applies hands on pressure to energetic pathways that run through your body.  These pathways are known as meridians or channels.

The best way to describe the way energy runs through your body is to visualize a river.  Picture it flowing swiftly downstream and then a huge boulder rolls into its path.  Water is then forced to go around the rock.  The rock represents our symptoms.  When the water takes a different path around the rock this is the way our body compensates for these symptoms.

For example, if you pull a muscle you might walk with a limp.  Limping is how we compensate.  If the limp resolves (either on its own or through treatment like an acupressure session), balance is restored when the pain (symptom) goes away.

A typical acupressure session is 60 minutes long and includes a comprehensive health assessment. The session is often performed on a futon mat on the floor. Massage tables can also be used. Clients wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing.

Acupressure is useful in resolving symptoms of any type whether they are physical, mental or emotional. It’s beneficial for anyone suffering from headaches/migraines, neck and shoulder pain, back pain, anxiety, depression, G.I. issues, PMS/menopausal symptoms and just about any health concern you might be experiencing. Stress is the number one cause of most health problems. When stress is reduced, symptoms have a tendency to resolve. Acupressure is a great way to reduce stress and restore balance.
