When I was in my twenties, I was an expert at burning the candles at both ends. Motivated to do everything I could to make a good life for my daughter and me, I worked a full-time job, and attended college at night. I remember being stressed all the time and I guess I thought—this is the way life is. That was my normal. Looking back, it seems anything but normal. Never once did it occur to me to slow down, be present, and take care of myself.

My journey started over 30 years ago. I had my first panic attack at 18 years old. My daughter was an infant and I was just a kid myself. At the time, no one was able to tell me what was happening to me. Not even my doctor. Looking back, the answers seem perfectly clear now.

Too much responsibility, too much to do and a limited support system sent my health on a downward spiral. It never occurred to me to look at my situation as a single parent trying to raise a child with limited income and not a lot of resources as a major contributor to my health crisis.

What I didn’t know then was that my gut health was compromised. I had no idea that the food I was eating was slowly eroding my health. No one ever told me I was lactose intolerant or that I was developing a gluten allergy. My stomach bothered me from time to time, but I’d pop a couple of Tum’s and just kept right on going. No one ever checked my hormone levels which were so unbalanced they were causing symptoms of depression, anxiety, excessive worrying, overthinking, I couldn’t seem to lose the weight that had settled around my middle, was often unfocused and my brain felt foggy, I had a hard time falling asleep and often woke up between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM. I was basically exhausted—mentally, emotionally and physically.

After 10 long years of searching and self-educating, my path crossed with a holistic practitioner. Using a combination of holistic therapies, together we were able to sort out my decade long diagnoses of anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. And once I got going, there was no stopping me.

I’ve spent most of my years since then accumulating knowledge, and using it to help others. My evening classes resulted in a Bachelor’s Degree from Northeastern University. I fell in love with homeopathy and studied at The Renaissance Institute of Classical Homeopathy, and Teleosis School of Homeopathy. In between my two homeopathic programs, I attended the Acupressure Therapy Institute where I learned about Traditional Chinese Medicine and Asian Bodywork Therapy. In 2008, I became a fully accredited Certified International Health Coach through The Institute of Integrative Nutrition and Teacher’s College, Columbia University. Then I took 10 years off from my educational pursuits to build my practice. But the lure of learning started whispering in my ear again, so I enrolled at Trinity School of Natural Health where I’m pursuing my Naturopathic Doctor designation. I believe with my whole being in the power of natural healing and am proud to be a member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners.

 

 

Balance is something I strive for everyday. I’m passionate about my work, but I’m a wife, mom, and grandmother (the girls call me Mimi) first. I try to remind myself every day that the work will wait, but lost moments with family can never be recaptured. It’s not always easy, but I try my best.

 

 

 

 

In addition to my family, we also have two dogs — Romeo (who believe it or not is camera shy!) and Sharky (isn’t he cute?) — who crave attention and love to snuggle on the couch with me. The “boys” as we call them are spoiled rotten. By me of course!

 

I’m a big fan of any food that’s green (especially wheat grass juice), juicing, yoga, raw dark chocolate, and I adore my Mini Cooper (which I named Bruno). Spending time outdoors restores me and I love puttering in my vegetable and flower gardens during the summer months. I’ve lived in the Boston area my whole life but love to travel. Some of the places I’ve enjoyed visiting the most are Martha’s Vineyard, Brigantine Island, and Key West. I guess I’m an island girl at heart!
